The first batch of India players has left for the tour which includes newly appointed ODI skipper Gill, Rohit, Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Washington Sundar, Dhruv Jurel, Prasidh Krishna among others.
The three ODIs have gained prominence since this will be the first time since IPL 2025 that Rohit and Kohli will be back in action. Eyes will be on duo’s form and fitness amid speculations over their ODI futures.
Former India head coach Ravi Shastri feels that the desire to keep scoring runs and fitness will be key if the senior batters dream of representing India at the 2027 ODI World Cup.
“It depends how hungry you are, how fit you are, whether that passion for the game is still there. With their experience, it’ll come in very handy,” Shastri said. “I would say take it one series at a time. It’s still a long way to go.”
“Hopefully, if they have a good one here (Australia), that should keep them in a good state of mind, thinking of South Africa. If they’re not enjoying it, if the form is not good, they might pull the plug themselves,” he added.
