Reigning champion Jannik Sinner produced a commanding performance on Wednesday, defeating compatriot Lorenzo Musetti in straight sets to book his place in the US Open semi-finals.
The world No. 1 eased
through their historic all-Italian quarter-final — the first ever at a men’s Grand Slam — with a 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 victory inside Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Sinner and Musetti, close friends off the court, made history simply by contesting in the match. But once play began, Sinner showed little sentiment, extending his perfect record against Italian opponents to 16-0.
“We have to take the friendship away for the match, and when we shake hands everything is fine again,” Sinner said. “It was a great performance, very solid. I started the match very well.
Sinner now advances to face Felix Auger-Aliassime, the 25th seed from Canada, in Friday’s semi-final.
The two have met three times previously, with Auger-Aliassime leading 2-1. However, Sinner demolished him last month in Cincinnati, dropping only two games in a one-sided encounter.
A Season for the History Books
The victory marked Sinner’s 86th career Grand Slam win, tying him with Italian legend Nicola Pietrangeli for the most by an Italian man. It was also his 26th consecutive victory at hard-court majors, a streak that highlights his growing dominance on the surface.
Sinner is chasing a slice of history in New York: he is aiming to become the first man to defend the US Open crown since Roger Federer, who completed his run of five straight titles in 2008.
The 24-year-old has already enjoyed a career-defining season. He has captured the Australian Open and Wimbledon titles in 2025, while narrowly missing out on the French Open after an epic five-set final loss to Carlos Alcaraz.
