David Miller is racing against time to regain fitness before the upcoming T20 World Cup after sustaining a suspected groin injury while fielding for the Paarl Royals during their match against the Joburg
Super Kings on Monday. He appeared to be in discomfort following the incident and exited the field in the 16th over. Miller did not return to bat during the Royals’ chase, raising concerns about the seriousness of his injury.
Currently, the exact nature and severity of Miller’s injury remain unclear. The Royals have not provided a detailed medical update, and Miller himself was unable to offer much information after the match.
“I don’t know, we’ll see tomorrow when I pick up. Obviously not ideal,” he said.
The Paarl Royals are set to face the Joburg Super Kings again in the Eliminator on Thursday, January 22. It remains uncertain whether Miller will be fit in time for that game. More importantly, his participation in the T20 World Cup is now in doubt.
South Africa is scheduled to play their first World Cup match on February 9 against Canada in Ahmedabad. With only a few weeks remaining, any injury setback becomes significant.
Miller is now the third player from South Africa’s T20 World Cup squad to suffer an injury leading up to the tournament. Donovan Ferreira earlier fractured his shoulder and has already been ruled out of the ongoing SA20. Tony de Zorzi is also recovering from a hamstring injury sustained on December 20. These repeated setbacks have added pressure on the squad as they prepare for the global event.
South Africa will be hoping Miller’s injury is not serious and that he can return to action soon. His experience and finishing ability make him a key part of their T20 plans, and his availability could significantly impact their campaign.
