Bangladesh has strongly condemned a drone attack on a United Nations base in Sudan that killed six of its peacekeepers. The attack took place in Abyei, where Bangladeshi soldiers were serving under the
UN peacekeeping mission.
In a press release, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the country was deeply shocked and saddened by the loss of lives. It confirmed that six Bangladeshi peacekeepers were killed and eight others were injured in the strike.
Bangladesh said such attacks on UN personnel are unacceptable and violate international law. The government expressed solidarity with the families of the victims and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
The Sudanese government too has condemned the drone attack, calling it a dangerous escalation in the ongoing conflict. In a statement, the army-aligned administration based in Port Sudan blamed the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces for carrying out the strike. The Sovereignty Council, led by army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, said attacks on United Nations facilities are unacceptable.
The incident comes as parts of Sudan face worsening humanitarian conditions. Kadugli, one of the affected areas, has been struggling with severe shortages, with famine declared in early November. The city lies in the wider Kordofan region, a key agricultural zone caught between rival forces.
