Bengaluru’s Namma Metro will have driverless trains plying on its all-important airport and pink lines.
A prototype of the advanced driverless Metro trainset, known as the 5RS-DM, was recently rolled out
by BEML Ltd signalling a major leap toward modernising the transit infrastructure for the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL).
This prototype, developed for the upcoming Namma Metro Phase 2, 2A, and 2B corridors, was formally unveiled by BMRCL managing director J Ravishankar at an event, where officials also witnessed a test run of the sophisticated trainset.
WHAT ARE ITS FEATURES?
The essence of this next-generation train lies in its capability for fully driverless operations, which is achieved through its compatibility with communication-based train control (CBTC) technology.
This system allows the Metro network to precisely manage train movements and ensure optimal scheduling and safety without requiring an onboard driver.
Safety and robust design were paramount in the train’s development. The trainsets comply with advanced fire safety and crashworthiness norms and meet rigorous international safety standards.
While the automation powers the system, the interior design focuses squarely on improving passenger experience. The new driverless trainsets feature highly energy-efficient systems, alongside modern amenities designed for comfort and connectivity.
Passengers will find upgraded passenger information displays, ergonomic seating, and improved accessibility provisions. Coaches are connected by extra-wide gangways that allow for seamless movement between carriages. The trains also include USB charging ports.
The rollout reflects BEML’s growing contribution to India’s Metro ecosystem, especially within the domain of driverless urban transit systems, fulfilling a significant portion of a Rs 3,177-crore contract. All design and engineering work for the trainsets was conducted by BEML’s in-house teams at their Bengaluru facility.
Ravishankar said the rollout reflects BEML’s commitment to supplying “state-of-the-art trainsets that would enhance the commuting experience”.
WHAT IS THE SIGNIFICANCE?
These advanced trainsets are earmarked for deployment on some of Bengaluru’s most vital upcoming transportation arteries, including Namma Metro’s phases 2, 2A, and 2B.
Under the current contract, BEML will supply 318 standard-gauge Metro cars designed for the airport (blue) and pink lines.
The airport line is highly anticipated and will connect the city to the Kempegowda International Airport. The pink line will run from Kalena Agrahara in the south up to Nagawara in the north.
Shantanu Roy, chairman and MD of BEML, said this prototype unveiling is a milestone in delivering “next-generation mobility solutions for India’s growing cities”.
The total supply commitment for BEML has grown due to additional orders, increasing the total number of cars to 396. These trainsets are now set to undergo an extensive programme of testing and commissioning, followed by up to 15 years of comprehensive maintenance support.
Just as a self-driving car navigates complex city streets by integrating sensors and AI, the driverless Metro train relies on sophisticated CBTC technology to manage speed, distance, and safety across the network, promising faster and more efficient urban travel.
