About Boong
Set in Manipur, the film tells a touching story about family and hope. It follows a young boy named Boong, played by Gugun Kipgen, who dreams of reuniting his family. Raised by his single mother Mandakini, portrayed by Bala Hijam Ningthoujam, Boong sets out on a journey with his best friend to find his missing father. The film beautifully captures innocence, emotions, and the strong bond between a mother and her child.
Boong’s victory has sparked celebrations across the country, with particular pride in Manipur, where the film’s roots and cultural essence are deeply embedded. The recognition at the BAFTA is a recognition of the film’s artistic merit and also brings international attention to stories emerging from India’s Northeast region, rich in culture, history and storytelling traditions.
The film first premiered at the 2024 edition of the Toronto International Film Festival and went on to be screened at the Warsaw International Film Festival, the MAMI Mumbai Film Festival, the International Film Festival of India and the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, among others, ahead of its theatrical release in September 2025.
