World Champion D Gukesh will return to Norway Chess, where he will take on Magnus Carlsen in yet another high-profile clash between two of the greatest minds on the planet.
Gukesh registered his first classical
win against Carlsen at Norway Chess 2025, pushing the Norwegian to the extent of slamming the table in frustration in a moment that went viral.
Gukesh had to endure a challenging season in 2025, on the back of his championships title with his win over Ding Liren in the year prior, and will look to get back to his familiar version.
Carlsen, on the other hand, seems to be picking and choosing his battles as the years pass, but has demonstrated his brilliance hasn’t left him time and again with noteworthy performances most times he sits down to play and compete over the 64-sqaure mat.
Gukesh, who became the youngest undisputed World Chess Champion at 18, is also the youngest player in history to cross the 2750 rating mark, and he earned the Grandmaster title at 12, now the third-youngest grandmaster of all time.
At the Chess Olympiad, he has delivered standout performances for India, winning individual gold on board one in 2022, followed by both team gold and individual gold on board one in 2024.
“I am really happy to take part in Norway Chess again, fighting against a very strong field as always, and looking forward to all the exciting games,” Gukesh D said.
COO of Norway Chess, Benedicte Westre Skog, said, “Having Gukesh D return to Norway Chess as reigning World Champion is something we truly value.”
“India has become one of the strongest chess nations in the world today, and we know many fans will be following Gukesh D closely,” he added.
“We hope chess audiences across India will tune in as he competes in Oslo in 2026,” Skog added.
