The first weekend is only half the battle for any big Bollywood release. It’s what happens on Monday that often decides whether a film is headed for a blockbuster run or a tougher journey. For Alpha, that crucial
weekday test has delivered a mixed report card.
The Alia Bhatt and Sharvari-led spy thriller has crossed Rs 63 crore worldwide in just four days, giving the YRF Spy Universe another decent start at the box office. However, after a promising opening weekend, the film witnessed a steep fall in collections on its first Monday, both in India and overseas.
Released across 9,000 screens in India on Friday, Alpha had opened with healthy momentum after collecting over Rs 6 crore through advance bookings. It earned Rs 9.25 crore net on its opening day before wrapping up its first weekend with Rs 34 crore net in India.
The real challenge arrived on Monday.
The film registered a sharp 70 per cent drop in domestic earnings, collecting only Rs 3.85 crore net on Day 4. That takes its total India collection to Rs 37.85 crore net, or Rs 45.34 crore gross, after four days.
The film has performed slightly better overseas, although international markets also saw collections dip on Monday. So far, Alpha has earned a little over $2.1 million internationally, taking its worldwide gross to Rs 63.64 crore after four days.
Even with the Monday decline, Alpha is still running ahead of Alia Bhatt’s 2018 hit spy thriller Raazi. The Meghna Gulzar directorial had collected around Rs 50 crore worldwide in its first four days. However, Raazi held much better on its first Monday, earning more than double what Alpha managed on the same day.
That said, Alpha hasn’t managed to match the pace of Alia’s biggest solo success, Gangubai Kathiawadi. Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film had collected over Rs 75 crore worldwide within its first four days and had posted a much stronger Rs 8 crore net on its first Monday.
Part of the YRF Spy Universe, Alpha is directed by Shiv Rawail and written by Uday Chopra. Besides Alia Bhatt and Sharvari, the film also features Bobby Deol and Anil Kapoor in key roles.
A part of the review by News18 read, “Alpha may not be the YRF Spy Universe’s strongest or most flawless outing. There are loopholes and the story remains largely predictable. But even with its imperfections, this one is a trailblazer. It sets a powerful precedent for women-led action films in mainstream Hindi cinema, proving that female protagonists can command scale, spectacle and star power just as convincingly as men. And sometimes, that shift in itself is bigger than narrative perfection. Alpha may stumble but it pushes the genre forward.”
