The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has announced plans to construct seven foot over bridges (FOBs) along the Metro Line 9 corridor between Dahisar East and Mira-Bhayandar, aiming
to improve pedestrian safety and provide smoother access to Metro stations.
The bridges will be developed under MMRDA’s Multi-Modal Integration (MMI) initiative and are expected to strengthen last-mile connectivity while making it easier for commuters to navigate some of the region’s busiest roads.
Seven Locations Identified For New Foot Over Bridges
According to a report in The Times of India, the proposed FOBs will be built at strategic points along the 11-km Metro Line 9 route. Two bridges are planned at Dahisar Toll Naka and Miragaon on the Western Express Highway, while the remaining five will come up at Kashigaon, Shivar Garden, Maxus Mall, Veg Sagar Hotel and Sai Baba Nagar along the Mira-Bhayandar Road.
Officials said these locations were selected to address pedestrian movement challenges in areas that witness heavy traffic and high commuter activity.
Focus On Safer Pedestrian Movement
Authorities believe the new bridges will help reduce risks faced by pedestrians attempting to cross wide and busy carriageways.
Both the Western Express Highway and Mira-Bhayandar Road experience substantial traffic volumes, making road crossings difficult and potentially unsafe. The grade-separated crossings are intended to provide a safer alternative while easing pressure on existing signalised crossings.
Equipped With Modern Facilities
The FOBs will vary in length from approximately 80 metres to 145 metres. Each structure is planned to have a standard width of three metres and will be equipped with lifts, staircases and CCTV surveillance systems to improve accessibility and security for users.
The facilities are expected to cater to a wide range of commuters, including senior citizens, persons with disabilities and daily metro passengers.
MMRDA has awarded the construction contract for the project, valued at Rs 82.09 crore, to a joint venture comprising Speco Infrastructure and PRS Infraprojects LLP. The authority expects work on the bridges to complement the broader expansion of Metro Line 9 and enhance commuter convenience once the corridor becomes fully operational.
Designed To Support Metro Line 9 Operations
According to MMRDA, the FOBs will play a crucial role in improving access to Metro Line 9 stations and facilitating smoother passenger movement. The bridges are also expected to assist in dispersing crowds during peak hours, reduce dependence on road-level crossings and contribute to better traffic flow along key stretches of the corridor.
Officials believe the improved connectivity could encourage greater use of the Metro network by making station access safer and more convenient.
Metro Line 9 Nearing Completion
Metro Line 9 serves as an extension of Metro Line 7 and it connects Dahisar East with Mira-Bhayandar. Phase I of the corridor was commissioned on April 7 this year, while work on the remaining sections is nearing completion.
Officials said the new FOBs are being planned in advance to ensure that safe pedestrian access is available from the beginning of full-scale Metro operations.
MMRDA Highlights Accessibility Goals
MMRDA Commissioner Sanjay Mukherjee said the initiative is aimed at enhancing station accessibility and delivering a safer, more comfortable travel experience for commuters.
The authority views the project as an important step towards creating an integrated transport ecosystem where metro stations are seamlessly connected with surrounding roads and neighbourhoods, improving overall mobility across the corridor.
