India all-rounder Washington Sundar shared clips of his training ahead of a likely return to the team’s 2026 T20 World Cup squad in the next few weeks.
Sundar picked up a side strain and a rib muscle tear
during the ODI series against New Zealand before the World Cup. He missed the ensuing five-T20I series, raising fears of being ruled out of the marquee event too. However, India named him in the squad.
Sundar shared a few photos and videos on Instagram, which looked to be from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru (CoE). Sundar, like most injured cricketers, has spent the last few weeks training and getting back to full fitness — and he confirmed that by showing himself lifting weights and even bowling a few balls in an open-nets game.

After the nervy win over the USA in the tournament opener on Saturday, captain Suryakumar Yadav also confirmed he’d be back for the match against Namibia on February 12 in Delhi.
“Washington Sundar is fit and will be joining the squad directly in Delhi,” Surya said at the post-match presentation.
Sundar is not a sure-shot starter in the team, but he provides balance and would immediately challenge for a spot in the playing 11. Although the team might be averse to rushing him back, the likes of Rinku Singh and Shivam Dube would be looking over their necks after their failures against the USA.
Sundar can contribute well in the middle-order while also providing a proper four-over option with the ball, which could be significant if the pitches remain as spin-friendly as they have been in the first few games. However, including him will come at the risk of reducing the team’s finishing prowess.
Nevertheless, it’s a good headache for the team management, which has already been dealt with one injury blow, Harshit Rana, and is dealing with two more players, Jasprit Bumrah and Abhishek Sharma, being ill.
