The Centre on Wednesday informed that the Lok Sabha that no shots were fired on student protesters during the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) agitation on July 20 and only tear gas was used.

Lok Sabha during the debate on the anti-leak paper bill, Union Minister Jitendra Singh dismissed Rahul Gandhi’s allegations that Union Home Minister Amit Shah authorised the use of force against protesters and said the authority to issue such an order rests with the magistrate, not the minister.
“It was repeatedly clarified that no shots were fired; tear gas was used. Since no shots were fired, the question of issuing an order does not arise. The authority to issue such an order rests with the magistrate, not the minister,” Singh said.

A row erupted in the Lok Sabha after Rahul Gandhi alleged that the Home Minister ordered security forces to shoot student protesters.
“I am very happy today to see that he so called Home Minister of this country does not have the courage to come and sit here… why is the Home Minister not here today? The Home Minister is not here today because he is scared. The Home Minister authorised the shooting of our students. He put pellets into the blood of our students. He ordered the students of India to be shot… The use of force can only be authorised by the Home Minister or the Prime Minister,” he said.
However, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju objected to Rahul Gandhi’s remark and demanded his apology.
“How can you say this? You are the LoP. On what basis are you saying this? Who told you this? What you said is wrong. I object, this should be expunged. Rahul Gandhi apologise…This is a serious allegation, this is breach of his own position and privilege,” he said.
Later, The Public Examination (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, passed in the Lok Sabha.
