In today’s world, skincare trends and products are everywhere, which can make it confusing to figure out what your skin actually needs. “In my practice, I meet many people who feel overwhelmed by complicated
skincare routines, and in many cases, they end up damaging their skin by using too many products. The truth is, taking care of your skin does not have to be complicated. If you follow a science-backed routine, you can maintain healthy and balanced skin,” says Dr Noopur Jain, Founder and Consultant Dermatologist at Skinzest, shares all you need to know:
1. Cleanse Your Skin Gently But Correctly
Cleansing is the first step in any skincare routine. Throughout the day, your skin accumulates excess oil, sweat, dirt, pollution, and makeup. If you do not cleanse your skin properly, pores can become clogged, which may lead to breakouts.
However, over-cleansing or using harsh products can strip the skin of its natural oils and weaken the skin barrier. This can result in dryness, irritation, sensitivity, and acne.
“I always advise people to choose a cleanser according to their skin type,” says Dr. Jain. “If you have sensitive skin, a gentle gel cleanser can work well. If you have oily skin, you may benefit from a balancing cleanser that removes excess oil without over-drying the skin.”
The goal is not to make your skin feel excessively stripped or squeaky clean, but to cleanse it while maintaining its natural balance.
2. Use A Moisturiser To Strengthen And Repair Your Skin
One of the biggest misconceptions in skincare is that moisturisers are only meant for dry skin. In reality, every skin type needs hydration, including oily and acne-prone skin.
A good moisturiser helps maintain the skin barrier, prevents water loss, and protects the skin from environmental damage. When the skin barrier becomes compromised, the skin is more likely to experience sensitivity, inflammation, and breakouts.
“For oily skin, I recommend lightweight moisturisers that hydrate without feeling greasy,” explains Dr. Jain. “For dry skin, richer moisturisers can help repair damage and improve overall skin texture.”
Healthy, hydrated skin not only looks better but also responds more effectively to other skincare products.
3. Always Protect Your Skin With Sunscreen
If there is one skincare step dermatologists consistently emphasise, it is sunscreen. According to Dr. Jain, sunscreen is essential regardless of age, weather, or whether you are indoors or outdoors.
Excessive sun exposure can accelerate skin ageing, worsen pigmentation, and damage the skin barrier. It can also aggravate conditions such as melasma, acne, and skin sensitivity.
“I always recommend using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every day,” says Dr. Jain. “You should also reapply sunscreen every few hours, especially if you are outdoors for extended periods.”
Ultimately, skincare does not need to be overwhelming. A simple, consistent, and science-backed routine can go a long way in keeping your skin healthy, resilient, and balanced.
Sometimes, the simplest skincare routine is the most effective one.
