The National Highways Authority Of India (NHAI) has directed all FASTag issuer banks to immediately validate Vehicle Registration Numbers (VRNs) linked to FASTags, following complaints of mismatches between
scanned data and actual vehicle number plates.
The move comes after multiple instances were reported where the VRN captured by FASTag readers did not correspond with the registration number displayed on vehicles. Such discrepancies can weaken enforcement systems, enable toll evasion, and potentially lead to violations under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
According to NHAI, inaccurate vehicle identification not only impacts revenue collection but also undermines the credibility of the Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) ecosystem. Ensuring data integrity has therefore become a priority for the authority.

Those who purchased second-hand vehicles or obtained FASTags several years ago should be especially cautious, as older FASTags issued before integration with the VAHAN Database may have higher chances of incorrect records.
While no fixed deadline has been announced, banks have been asked to act immediately, indicating that users should not delay verification. Ensuring correct FASTag details now can help avoid last-minute issues, especially as India transitions to more advanced tolling technologies.

The push for accurate FASTag data comes ahead of the planned rollout of Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling, a barrier-less system that relies entirely on automated vehicle identification. Under this system, penalties and electronic notices will be issued based on digital records, making accurate VRN mapping crucial.
