Hero MotoCorp has confirmed that a brand-new Harley-Davidson motorcycle, based on the 440 platform, will launch in India within the July–September quarter.
This model will join the Harley-Davidson X440
in the brand’s growing portfolio. The announcement came during Hero MotoCorp’s investor call on 7 August, as per Autocar.
This will be the third motorcycle born from the Harley-Hero alliance, which began in 2020 with a vision to design and manufacture premium bikes for Indian riders and select international markets.
Can It Overcome Past Sales Hurdles?
While the X440 and the now-discontinued Mavrick 440 brought style and Harley’s iconic branding, sales have been underwhelming. In the last financial year ending 31 March 2025, combined sales stood at 13,963 units.
The April–June 2025 quarter saw a sharper dip, with just 1,854 units sold—a 63 percent fall compared to the same period last year.
The Mavrick 440, launched only 18 months ago, was recently pulled from the line-up due to weak demand. The 350–500cc motorcycle market remains fiercely competitive, with Royal Enfield’s Guerrilla, Bajaj’s Dominar, and KTM’s Duke commanding strong followings.
Hero’s Strategy Beyond the 440 Platform
Despite these setbacks, Hero MotoCorp remains confident about the premium segment. Traditionally strong in the commuter category with 100–110cc bikes, the company is actively diversifying.
Apart from the upcoming Harley-Davidson 440 model, Hero will also launch two new 125cc motorcycles before the festive season. This move is aimed at taking on Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India in a segment that’s seeing rapid growth.
What’s Next?
The success of the new Harley 440 model could be crucial for Hero and Harley’s premium ambitions in India. With competition heating up and customers demanding more style, power and features, all eyes will be on how this upcoming launch shifts the dynamics in the market.
