The Indian women’s cricket team entered their name in the history books on Wednesday, September 17, by becoming the first team in the world to secure a win by a margin of more than 100 runs against Australia
in an ODI match. In the second ODI of the ongoing three-match series between the two teams played at Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, New Chandigarh, India defeated Australia by 102 runs.
The previous biggest margin of win against Australia in ODIs by runs was 92 by England. India’s previous biggest win in ODIs against Australia was by 88 runs in Chennai on December 28, 2004.

In the second ODI, India posted a total of 292/10 in 49.5 overs after Australian captain Alyssa Healy won the toss and opted to field first.
For India, Smriti Mandhana top-scored in the must-win match. The left-handed batter opened the innings for the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side and, with the help of 14 fours and 4 sixes, scored 117 runs from 91 balls. She crossed the 100-run mark in 77 balls. Apart from Mandhana, all-rounder Deepti Sharma added 40 runs to India’s total, and then she also picked up two wickets for 24 runs in six overs.
For India, apart from her, pacer Kranti Gaud dismissed three Australian batters for 28 runs in 9.5 overs.
The super bowling show by Kranti and Deepti helped India bowl Australia out for just 190 runs in 40.5 overs.
For the visitors, Annabel Sutherland hammered 45 runs from 42 balls, and Ellyse Perry made a contribution of 44 runs from 61 balls.
The win on Wednesday was India’s first success over Australia in an ODI match played in India after more than 18 years. India’s last win against Australia in a home ODI came at Chepauk in February 2007.
In women’s cricket, India have won 11 out of 58 matches played so far against the Australian team. Of those 11 wins, only five have come in front of home fans.
