New Delhi, Oct 23 (PTI) Hollywood icon Tom Hanks is set to return to Broadway after 14 years with the play “This World of Tomorrow”.
Hanks, who last appeared on Broadway in Nora Ephron’s 2013 play “Lucky
Guy”, a performance that earned him a Tony Award nomination, has co-created the stage show based on based on a series of short stories that he had written.
“This World of Tomorrow” began as an Off-Broadway show last year with Hanks appearing in it alongside theatre veteran Kelli O’Hara.
It is a time-travel romance set in the late 21st century, following the life of Bert Allenberry, who repeatedly travels back in time in an attempt to change his future.
According to the official logline, Bert journeys back “again, and again, and again” to one remarkable day at the 1939 New York World’s Fair in Queens, where he discovers that the future is shaped not by technology, but by the choices people make for love.
The play is directed by Kenny Leon, whose recent theatre credits include “The Balusters”, “Othello”, starring Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal, and “Our Town”, featuring Jim Parsons and Katie Holmes.
“I’m so excited to continue this work on this amazing new American play. There’s no time like the present to further explore this story of love and time travel from Glossman and Hanks,” Leon said.
Producer Brian Anthony Moreland described Hanks as “one of the great storytellers of our time” and called it an “incredible privilege” to bring this play to Broadway. PTI COR RB
