Most people think they know sriracha sauce, but the original story goes much deeper. Long before it became popular around the world, sriracha was first made in Thailand. The oldest and original version
comes from a brand called Hattakam Makarn. This sauce was first created almost 100 years ago and is still made using the same method today.
It began in the town of Si Racha in Thailand’s Chonburi province, where a local woman created the recipe at home. The sauce is made using simple ingredients like chillies, garlic, vinegar, sugar and salt. What makes it special is the way it is prepared. Even now, the chillies are ground by hand using stone tools to bring out their natural oils and flavour. A content creator recently visited this historic shop in Bangkok, where small bottles of the original sauce are still sold for just 35 baht (approximately Rs 100).
The Little-Known Story Behind Thailand’s Original Sriracha Sauce
Taking to Instagram, the content creator said, “Let me show you the world’s oldest Sriracha maker in Thailand. Sriracha sauce was actually invented by a Thai lady in a city called Si Racha in Chonburi province of Thailand. Now they still have this historic little shop in Bangkok, where you can get a small bottle of the original sauce that is still made by hand for just 35 baht. It’s made from chillies, garlic, vinegar, sugar and salt. Same recipe as almost 100 years back. They still stone grind the chillies to extract their natural oils to make a deep smoky flavour.”
In the caption, he added, “Sriracha sauce was actually invented in Thailand, in a city called Sriracha in Chonburi Province, by a local lady who then started production in Bangkok, where they still have this cute little shop where you can get a small bottle of the most original Sriracha for 35 Baht.”

“FYI, the original Sriracha sauce tastes very different in the US. It tastes more sour, very spicy compared to those in the US, and also has a different smell based on Thai chillies (US is adapted by using Jalapenos). This grandpa recipe may not be the best yummy one, but worth trying the old-fashioned style of Sriracha sauce,” a comment read.
An individual stated, “I know that sriracha sauce came from Sriracha, but I didn’t know it was this place!! Always thought it was Sriracha Panit or Khoa Loy.”
Another mentioned, “They should have an online store! It will sell out, and they will have to make a waitlist.”
One more shared that Sriracha chilli sauce’s first recipe was created by three local families from the Si Racha in Chonburi province. Over time, each family followed a different path. One brand, Koh Loy, is still sold only in the Si Racha region. Another, Sriraja Panich, later became part of a large company and was sold across the world. This shows how a local sauce slowly turned into a global product while still keeping its roots in Thailand.
