If talks between the United States and Iran break down, the administration of Donald Trump is considering several ways to end the war, including capturing Kharg Island. According to CNN, citing White House
officials, taking control of the island could push Iran’s Revolutionary Guard towards bankruptcy and bring a quick end to the conflict.
Kharg Island, located around 30 km off Iran’s mainland, handles about 90 per cent of the country’s crude oil exports. Reports suggest the US is weighing plans to seize or blockade the island to pressure Tehran into reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for nearly one-fifth of global oil supply. The island was targeted in US air raids earlier this month.
White House signals military readiness
The White House said the US military could strike Kharg Island at any time if ordered. Principal Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly said the administration was prepared for any action, adding that the US had already destroyed more than 40 Iranian minelaying vessels to protect navigation and energy flows.
US ground operations under consideration
While the war has largely involved air strikes so far, Pentagon officials have outlined plans for possible ground operations inside Iran. These include deploying troops to seize key targets, although such moves carry risks of heavy casualties and may not guarantee an end to the conflict.
Trump is weighing whether to escalate further while also pushing for a diplomatic solution. He has sent thousands of additional troops to the region but remains cautious about deepening the conflict. “They’re defeated, they can’t make a comeback,” he said, adding that Iran now has a chance to make a deal.
US-Iran talks continue
The US president has delayed strikes on Iran’s energy infrastructure until April 6 to allow time for negotiations. However, a 15-point US peace proposal has been rejected by Iran, while Tehran’s own demands, including war reparations, were also dismissed.
Despite saying talks are “going very well”, Trump has warned that attacks could intensify if Iran does not cooperate.
