US President Donald Trump congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi on what he described as a “historic, decisive” victory after the Bharatiya Janata Party secured power in West Bengal for the first time.

“The President congratulates Prime Minister Modi on this recent, historic, and decisive election victory,” White House spokesperson Kush Desai said. The BJP crossed the majority mark in the 294-member West Bengal Assembly, winning 206 seats, according to the Election Commission of India. With polling in the Falta constituency countermanded, the effective majority mark stood at 147.
The result marks a dramatic shift in the state’s political landscape, ending over a decade of dominance by the Trinamool Congress.

Among the standout performances, BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari secured victories in both Bhabanipur and Nandigram- two of the most closely watched constituencies. In Bhabanipur, Suvendu Adhikari defeated Chief Minister Mamata Mamata Banerjee by a margin of 15,105 votes after the final round of counting.
The election also recorded exceptionally high voter turnout, with 92.8% polling in the first phase and 91.47% in the second- the highest in the state since Independence.

The BJP’s sweeping victory signals a major political realignment in West Bengal, with the party making significant gains from its previous tally and positioning itself to form the next government in the state.
