Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk on Monday announced that he has been discharged from Medanta Hospital in Gurugram, days after ending his 26-day hunger strike over the NEET paper leak controversy and student
protests. He said he would visit Rajghat to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi before returning to the mountains.
The visit holds symbolic significance, as Wangchuk had also visited Rajghat on June 28 before launching his indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar in support of students affected by the paper leak issue.
In a post on X, Wangchuk wrote, “AND FINALLY….I’m being discharged from the hospital. Will be going to Rajghat to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi and then back to the mountains. Thank you all and BIG THANK YOU to the wonderful team of doctors and staff at Medanta Hospital Gurgaon.”

Wangchuk was admitted to Medanta Hospital after being shifted from Safdarjung Hospital following a Delhi High Court order. The court had allowed his transfer to a hospital of his choice for further treatment and monitoring.
The activist had ended his 26-day indefinite fast at Medanta Hospital after discussions with government representatives and assurances over measures related to examination reforms and action against paper leaks.
Wangchuk joined the protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on June 28 and remained on an indefinite hunger strike for 26 days, with the protest later becoming part of a wider campaign led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP).
CJP Ends 36-day Protest
The 36-day agitation concluded after the resignation of then Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Saturday.
Reacting to the development, Wangchuk posted on X, saying, “This is a victory of democracy, a victory of direct democracy that emerged directly from the streets. It is a victory of peace, patience and determination. Congratulations to CJP and the country’s Gen Z.”
After his discharge, Wangchuk is scheduled to visit Rajghat to pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi before leaving for Ladakh.
