When fashion, cinema and a bit of fangirl energy collide, you get a moment that feels straight out of a movie scene. That’s exactly what happened when Karan Johar found himself in the same frame as two
of Hollywood’s most celebrated stars, and let’s just say, he wasn’t keeping calm.
The filmmaker recently shared glimpses from his meeting with Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway in Tokyo, where the actors are promoting The Devil Wears Prada 2. The interaction, which quickly caught attention online, brought together Bollywood glamour and one of Hollywood’s most iconic fashion film legacies.
Taking to Instagram, Karan Johar expressed his admiration in an emotional and candid note. He wrote, “This is not a caption. This is a confession. I am singularly obsessed and inspired by the unmatchable brilliance of Meryl Streep. In many ways she has been my guru in the art of acting & portraying characters across cinema!!”

“I have watched The Devil Wears Prada no less than 47 times. I have quoted it at dinner tables, in edit suites and in board meetings (no kidding!) So when I tell you that standing next to HER & them today, I felt the ground shift, please believe me. I tried very hard to be calm and composed but here’s a another confession – my knees were RATTLING! They were both so warm and welcoming. This image is going in my will. Stay tuned, there’s so much more…because I had a chat with the favourites of the season. OH and one more thing…that’s all ”
The meeting comes at a time when anticipation is building around The Devil Wears Prada 2, which reunites key members of the original team. Director David Frankel and writer Aline Brosh McKenna return for the sequel, alongside lead actors Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci. The new instalment also expands its ensemble with names such as Kenneth Branagh, Simone Ashley, Justin Theroux, Lucy Liu, Patrick Brammall, Caleb Hearon, Helen J. Shen, Pauline Chalamet, B.J. Novak and Conrad Ricamora. Tracie Thoms and Tibor Feldman will reprise their roles as Lily and Irv.
The film is scheduled to release in cinemas on May 1, 2026, under 20th Century Studios.
Set years after the original, the sequel follows Andy as she returns to Runway magazine, navigating a transformed media landscape. Miranda Priestly, meanwhile, is faced with new challenges as the publication’s future hangs in the balance. The story also brings back Emily, now heading a luxury brand that could play a crucial role in Runway’s survival.
Interestingly, the journey to a sequel has been a long one. Author Lauren Weisberger had released a follow-up novel, Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns, in 2013. However, both Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway had earlier expressed hesitation about returning, with Streep reportedly uninterested and Hathaway keen to collaborate on something different.
It was only in July 2024 that discussions around a sequel gained momentum, with Walt Disney Studios, the parent company of 20th Century Studios, backing the project. Negotiations soon followed, bringing back the original creative team and cast for what is now one of the most anticipated fashion dramas in recent times.
