The CBSE has introduced a two-phase board examination system for Class 10 students for the 2026 academic session, offering students greater flexibility and an extra opportunity to enhance their performance.
While the official timetable is yet to be released, Phase 2 exams will be conducted from May 15, 2026, after the Phase 1 board exam results are declared.
The higher of the two scores will be considered as the final result. However, students who are absent in three or more subjects in the first exam will not be permitted to appear for the second. Those who fail any subject in the first exam can treat the second as a compartment chance.

CBSE Phase 2 Board Exam 2026: Eligibility Criteria
The board has outlined who is eligible to appear in the second examination:
— Under the Improvement category, students who have passed the first exam may reappear in up to three main subjects—Science, Mathematics, Social Science, and languages—to enhance their scores.
— Under the Compartment category, students placed in Compartment in the first exam may take the second exam in that category.
— In some cases, a student may fall under both Improvement and Compartment provisions and, in line with CBSE’s guidelines, may be permitted to use both options.
— There is also a Replacement subject option. Students who have already passed but wish to replace or improve a particular subject may appear in the second examination for that specific subject.
The Phase 2 board exam system is designed to give students a fair chance to improve their academic performance without losing an academic year. Students should regularly check the official CBSE website for confirmed dates and updates.
