DMK leader and Tamil Nadu Leader of Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin has landed in a political controversy after an alleged “double meaning” remark regarding actress Trisha Krishnan during a public rally
in Thanjavur. The comment, made during a protest over the Cauvery water dispute, triggered massive backlash and eventually led to his arrest on Tuesday, August 4. As Trisha’s fans also express disappointment over the remark, let’s take a look at what exactly Stalin said.
What Did Udhayanidhi Stalin Say About Trisha?
During a recent DMK protest in Thanjavur over the Cauvery water dispute and Karnataka’s proposed Mekedatu project, Udhayanidhi Stalin was addressing a gathering when he criticised Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay. As the crowd reportedly began chanting Trisha’s name, Udhayanidhi responded with a remark in Tamil that roughly translates to: “Wherever water comes, whether it comes or not, water should come there.” However, he immediately clarified that he was referring to the Cauvery water.
The timing of the remark, immediately after the crowd chanted Trisha’s name, led to accusations that it carried a vulgar or sexual innuendo.
Why Was Trisha’s Name Chanted?
Trisha has been associated with Tamil cinema for more than two decades and has previously worked with Vijay, who is now the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and heads the TVK. The two are also rumoured to be dating one another. However, neither of them has officially confirmed romance rumours as of now.
Why Did The Comment Become Controversial?
The remark quickly became a political flashpoint, with the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) accusing Udhayanidhi of making an offensive and objectifying comment about a woman in a public forum.
The TVK approached the National Commission for Women and also filed a police complaint against the DMK leader. The party alleged that the comment amounted to verbal harassment and objectification of a woman. The BJP and Congress also criticised Udhayanidhi and demanded that he withdraw the remark and apologise.
As the controversy escalated, Udhayanidhi was arrested from his Chennai residence on August 4 after a case was filed against him in connection with his speech.
