For years, Lakshadweep existed in the Indian imagination as a distant paradise that most people only saw in postcards or geography textbooks. Crystal lagoons, empty white beaches, coral reefs and islands
so untouched that they felt almost fictional. But actually getting there? That always seemed complicated, expensive, or reserved for a niche group of travellers.
According to government data and tourism reports, tourist arrivals to Lakshadweep have surged dramatically in recent years, jumping from just a few thousand annual visitors in the past to well over 68,000 tourists recently. The islands, once considered one of India’s most inaccessible destinations, are now seeing an unprecedented travel boom powered by social media, improved connectivity, government-backed tourism pushes and growing curiosity among Indian travellers looking for alternatives to destinations like the Maldives.
With an azure sea as far as the eye can see, a laid-back vibe that harks back to the lesser-known beaches of Goa, and crystal-clear waters that’ll make you put on your bathing suits and jump right in – Agatti is Lakshadweep’s crowning jewel. This tropical island, which features the only airport in this group of islands off the coast of India, is barely 8 km long, with roughly 8000 residents. This simply means that you can finally have a beach vacation, away from the crowds on mainland shores.
What To Do In Agatti Island
An island life is marked by two simple things: water sports and sunbathing on Lakshadweep’s powdery sand beaches. But we recommend keeping the beach for your evenings and making the most of your island mornings with water sports. Considering the diversity of flora and fauna that abound in the tranquil water, in addition to the spectacular colourful coral reefs, you’ll be remiss if you don’t partake in scuba diving here. There are many water sports companies on the island, who’ll take you snorkelling, diving and glass bottom boat rides (if you’re scared of the water). There’s kayaking, sailing and skiing on the offer too.
If you find lighthouses fascinating, you can head to the Agatti Lighthouse, located on the tip of the island. According to reports, you can also climb to the top of the lighthouse for panoramic views of the island and its surroundings but it is important to check with local authorities about permissions, when you’re there.
When you run out of things to do in Agatti Island, you can embark on an island-hopping excursion to neighbouring atolls like Bangaram, Kadmat, Bitra, Amini, Andretti, Kalpeni, Minicoy, and more.
And then there’s food. Since most of the population on this island is engaged in fishing as their primary occupation, you can expect to savour a variety of seafood. Think delicacies like fish curry, prawns, and lobster. Don’t miss the local specialties like tuna and mackerel.
Where to Stay: Agatti offers a limited range of accommodations, mostly basic guesthouses and resorts. They have basic services in place, no luxuries.
How To Reach Agatti: Indian Airlines operates flights from Kochi to Agatti Island Airport. You can also take direct flights from Bengaluru and Kozhikode to the island.
How Much Does A Trip Cost?
Lakshadweep is still not a budget backpacking destination in the traditional sense. Limited accommodation and logistics make it more expensive than many mainland beach holidays.
Approximate costs:
Flights from Kochi to Agatti: often Rs 8,000–20,000 depending on season
Budget packages: around Rs 25,000–40,000
Mid-range stays: Rs 50,000+
Premium island resorts: significantly higher
Government tourism packages often include accommodation, meals, permits and transfers together, making planning easier.
The Best Time To Visit
The ideal season is usually between October and March, when the weather is calmer and water activities are more accessible.
