The political evolution of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, from a powerful Congress insider to one of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s most influential leaders, is believed to be a defining shift
in the state’s political landscape.
His journey, marked by organisational acumen and electoral strategy, is once again in focus as early trends in the ongoing Assembly election counting indicate a strong performance for the BJP-led alliance.
Multiple media reports have consistently highlighted that Sarma began his career in the Congress, where he was considered a key political strategist and an influential minister in successive state governments.
His eventual exit from the party and entry into the BJP marked a turning point, not only in his own career but also in Assam’s electoral politics.
Analysts have often credited his move with accelerating the BJP’s expansion in the Northeast, particularly in Assam, where the party went on to form governments and consolidate its base.
That political capital appears intact in the current election cycle.
According to an ANI report citing Election Commission trends, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) was leading in 87 constituencies, comfortably crossing the halfway mark in early counting.
The BJP alone was ahead in 71 seats, while its allies, the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), were leading in 9 and 7 seats respectively.
These numbers underscore the continued strength of the coalition that Sarma has helped shape and sustain.
Sarma himself was leading from the Jalukbari Assembly constituency, as reported by IANS, reinforcing his long-standing dominance in the seat.
His repeated victories from Jalukbari have been cited in Indian media as evidence of his strong grassroots network and consistent voter support.
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal expressed confidence in the alliance’s return to power, telling ANI, “The result will be as we had expected. The NDA government will be formed again under the leadership of the BJP. We said this with confidence that we are close to 100 (seats) with our allies.”
His remarks reflect the broader belief within the BJP that Sarma’s leadership continues to anchor the party’s electoral success in the state.
On the other hand, the Congress has maintained a cautious watch.
Assam Congress President Gaurav Gogoi said the party had deployed observers across the state and was monitoring every round of counting.
“We are hoping for a positive result in Assam. We will keep an eye on every round,” he said, according to ANI.
In Jorhat, Gogoi was trailing BJP’s Hitendra Nath Goswami after the first round of counting, with Goswami securing 4,993 votes against Gogoi’s 3,937 votes, IANS reported.
Officials added that only one of 14 rounds had been completed, and margins could change as counting progresses.
The Assembly elections, held on April 9, recorded a high voter turnout of 85.96 per cent from an electorate of over 2.5 crore, with 722 candidates in the fray.
Sarma’s political journey reflects a blend of strategic realignment and administrative leadership.
The current trends further reinforce his standing as one of the BJP’s strongest leaders, with sustained influence both within the state and across the party’s broader national framework.
