Ahmedabad News: India’s first Bullet Train project is gathering pace, with Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw saying major milestones are expected over the coming months as construction and train
manufacturing advance.
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) Corridor, India’s first high-speed rail project, is progressing rapidly, with the first section between Surat and Bilimora targeted for commissioning in 2027, as reported by Economic Times.
Ashwini Vaishnaw said the wider project is also advancing faster than anticipated, while manufacturing of the Bullet Train itself has reached a significant stage with the first coach for testing already manufactured.
First Bullet Train Coach Ready For Testing
The Railway Minister recently reviewed the progress of train manufacturing and said the first test coach has already been completed. The development marks an important step for the project, as Indian manufacturing moves alongside the construction of the high-speed rail infrastructure.
Civil construction is also progressing across key sections of the corridor. Work on the Vapi-Surat section is expected to be completed by December 2026, according to the project update.
With construction gathering pace and the first test coach ready, the project is entering a crucial phase ahead of the planned launch of India’s first high-speed rail service.
Surat-Bilimora Section To Be Commissioned First
One of the key milestones expected next year is the commissioning of the Surat-Bilimora section. The section is expected to become the first operational stretch of the 508-kilometre Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor, giving passengers an early glimpse of India’s high-speed rail network.
The wider stretch is also progressing, with civil works advancing across multiple sections in Gujarat and Maharashtra.
What Is The Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Project?
The 508-kilometre Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor passes through Maharashtra, Gujarat and the Union Territory of Dadra & Nagar Haveli. The project was formally launched with the foundation stone being laid in September 2017, marking the beginning of India’s high-speed rail journey.
The corridor is designed to significantly reduce travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad while offering passengers improved comfort, safety and reliability.
12 Stations On The Bullet Train Corridor
The MAHSR corridor will have 12 stations:
- Mumbai (BKC)
- Thane
- Virar
- Boisar
- Vapi
- Bilimora
- Surat
- Bharuch
- Vadodara
- Anand
- Ahmedabad
- Sabarmati
The stations are being designed with modern architecture, passenger amenities and multimodal connectivity, with each station intended to reflect aspects of the city or region it serves.
When Will India’s First Bullet Train Start?
The first high-speed rail service on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor is expected to begin in August 2027. The initial Surat-Bilimora section is targeted for commissioning before the full corridor becomes operational. The project is being positioned as a major step towards modernising India’s railway network, improving connectivity between major economic centres and supporting wider economic development.
As civil construction and train manufacturing move forward together, India’s first Bullet Train project is steadily moving from construction to the testing and commissioning stage.
