Cheat meals have occupied a strangely guilty corner of wellness culture. One pizza slice becomes a “bad day,” dessert is treated like a failure, and strict diets often leave people trapped in exhausting
cycles of restriction and bingeing.
But according to Salman Khan, fitness may not need to be quite so miserable after all. At 60 years old, boasting one of the most chiseled and envied physiques in cinema, the actor recently revealed an unconventional food philosophy- for him, every single day is a cheat day.
The secret behind his lifelong fitness isn’t standard bland dieting, but rather strict portion control and an unyielding commitment to burning off what he consumes. Instead of completely depriving himself of flavorful meals or enduring flavorless, steamed alternatives, Salman chooses to indulge mindfully. As he candidly shared in an interview with Variety India, “Every day is a cheat day for me. I’d rather spend that extra 20 minutes in the gym or the extra one hour in the gym, but I’ll eat what I’ll eat. I don’t do steamed.”
Portion Control Over Deprivation
The backbone of Salman’s dietary lifestyle can be summed up by his strict stance on carbohydrates. While he loves robust flavors, he applies a rigorous “one-tablespoon” rule to calorie-dense staples. “The amount of protein that I need to eat, I just eat…no matter how tasty the food is…I will take one tablespoon of rice. I don’t touch rotis. That’s it,” he explained. By pairing a tiny fraction of rice with the necessary protein intake, he maintains his muscle mass without the excessive carb load.
The Power of ‘Ghar Ka Khana’
Despite his immense fame, Salman’s culinary preferences are surprisingly grounded. His personal trainer, Rakkesh R Uddiyar, notes that the actor is entirely devoted to traditional, home-cooked meals. Specifically, he prefers food prepared by his mother, Salma Khan. Whether traveling or on set, his consistent demand remains: “Ghar ka khana do. Mummy ne jo banaya wahi khana lagao” (Give me home-cooked food. Serve what mother made).
A typical day in Salman’s food life includes:
Morning: A hearty start consisting of porridge, eggs, and fresh fruits.
Afternoon: Home-cooked fish or chicken paired with heavy portions of vegetables and salads.
The Treat: A massive love for Biryani, though always balanced strictly to remain under a 2000-calorie limit.
He even enjoys a quick, tangy addition to his meals, famously sharing his own recipe for an instant onion pickle made with fennel seeds, kalonji, red chili powder, and mustard oil.
Salman’s Fitness Mantra
At the core of Salman’s lifestyle is consistency. He combines disciplined workouts with realistic eating habits and a strong preference for fresh, home-cooked food. His famous love for his mother’s cooking shows that emotional comfort and tradition can coexist with fitness goals.
For anyone struggling with rigid diet plans, Salman’s philosophy offers valuable inspiration: you don’t have to eliminate joy from your plate. A tablespoon of rice, a piece of home-cooked chicken, and extra effort in the gym might just be the perfect formula for long-term success.
