Sushmita Sen On Her Struggle For Being A Single Mother
Recently, during a conversation with Dr Sheen Gurrib, the former Miss Universe opened up about her struggles for being a single mother, especially in 2000.
In 2000, despite societal stigma and severe legal scrutiny, Sushmita became one of India’s first single women to adopt a child. Recalling those anxious early years, she stated, “When I legally became an adult at 21, I knew this is what I wanted to do.
From 21 to 24, the legal struggle started. Once the legal battle started, at least, I had my daughter under foster care with me. But you are living with the continuous fear that if the family court does not rule in my favour, they will take the child back, and now this youngster is calling (me) Ma.”
What happened next sounded right out of a screenplay. “I had a plan.” At the hearing, I informed my father that if he kept the car running, he’d take her and leave.
My father says, “Now we’re really pushing it. We will not do any of that. But I was thinking, they cannot take my baby away from me.”
Furthermore, the actress credited her father for helping her win the case. “I’m very proud of my father. In a country where adopting a child requires a father or a father figure, he is the reason I have my children. The court told him that he needed to establish financial intent to support my child and sign off on half of his assets, but my father told the court, “I am not a very rich man, so if you take half of that, it will be nothing.”
“I’ve come to unconditionally sign everything I own in her name.”
