victory at the T20 World Cup 2024, Rohit Sharma’s team ended the country’s 11-year ICC trophy drought (2013 Champions Trophy) by beating South Africa in a thriller.
Then, the boys, led by Sharma, showed up at the Champions Trophy 2025 and continued their dominant, unbeaten streak, winning the coveted trophy by edging out New Zealand. A year later, in March of 2026, Suryakumar Yada’s clan showed why India were the best in the business, taking their third T20 World Cup trophy home in a one-sided affair against the Kiwis.
The recent triumph had barely sunk in, and the roster for the new season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), the ultimate cricket carnival, is already out. With IPL a stone’s throw away, a cricket fan from India sparked a massive debate on X with an “unpopular opinion”, leaving sports lovers in a fix.
“Winning An IPL Trophy Is Tougher…”
An X (formerly Twitter) account that goes by the handle @Rajiv1841 expressed that, according to them, winning the ICC T20 World Cup was easier than lifting the IPL trophy. The fan reasoned that each franchise in the IPL stood a chance of winning the league owing to the auction setup and dynamics. However, ICC tournaments featured a handful of competitive teams. The rest of the participants did not stand a chance of winning the cup, the fan believed.
“Unpopular Opinion – Winning an IPL trophy is far tougher than winning a T20I World Cup. Because in T20I WCs, there are barely 3-4 competitive teams & in IPL all teams are equally competetive due to auction dynamics (sic),” the user wrote.

The Stakes Of T20 World Cup Are Superior
The unpopular opinion raised eyebrows online as critics laid down a few points and examples to hit the message home that winning the ICC T20 World Cup wasn’t exactly a walk in the park.
The Pressure:
“Wrong! The pressure in T20I world cup is far more than IPL. IPL helps with the preparation, but World Cup is the end game (sic),” a user wrote in response.
Representing Country Vs Franchise Cricket
Mocking the unpopular take, a cricket fan wrote: “Winning franchisee level cricket is bigger than representing your country and winning at international level!! Okay… I fail to understand how the brains work! (sic)”
Another shared a nuanced reasoning why World Cup was a pressure cooker situation not to be taken lightly.
“IPL is a long league with strong squads, but World Cup pressure is a completely different beast. IPL tests consistency for 2 months. World Cup tests nerves in a few high-pressure games. In IPL you lose a match and still recover. In World Cups one bad day can end everything.”

Flawed Take?
The critics argued that if winning a T20 trophy was a piece of cake, players such as Rohit Sharma would have more ICC cups in their cabinet than IPL victories. Much like the ICC tournaments, there were several IPL franchises, such as Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings, and newer franchise Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) that are yet to win the championship.

A few, though, preferred the madness and drama that IPL brought to the country. The delicious mix of international players, the Men in Blue pitted against each other, the routine banters and fights on and off the field – all making for spicy franchise cricket.
Meanwhile, the countdown has begun, literally. In 15 days, Royal Challengers Bengaluru will take on Sunrisers Hyderabad on Saturday, March 28, to kick off the IPL 2026 edition.
