In a major push to strengthen Telangana’s transport network and significantly reduce travel time, the Central government has taken a key decision. The Union Cabinet has officially approved the construction
of a new four-lane National Highway (NH-167) from Mahbubnagar to Gudeballur, located on the Karnataka border.
The decision was taken during a Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with Rs 3,175 crore allocated for the ambitious infrastructure project.
Part Of The Hyderabad–Goa Economic Corridor
The proposed Mahbubnagar–Gudeballur highway is not just a district-level road upgrade—it is a crucial segment of the prestigious Hyderabad–Goa Economic Corridor.
Once completed, this highway will make travel much smoother and more efficient for passengers heading from Hyderabad toward Raichur, Mantralayam, and Goa.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will construct the project under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM), covering approximately 80.01 kilometres.
This strategic stretch is expected to play an important role in improving regional connectivity and boosting interstate mobility.
Travel Time to Reduce by 1.5 Hours
The expansion of the existing two-lane road into a modern four-lane highway is expected to bring significant relief to commuters. To ensure smoother traffic flow and reduce congestion, dedicated bypass roads will be constructed around key towns, including Mahbubnagar, Devarakadra, Marikal, Makthal, and Maganoor. These bypasses will allow through-traffic to avoid crowded town centres, resulting in faster and safer travel.
Officials estimate that this major upgrade will reduce travel time by nearly 1.5 hours. For tourists travelling from Hyderabad to Goa, this highway is expected to become one of the fastest and most efficient routes.
The improved road infrastructure will also enhance driving comfort, reduce fuel consumption, and improve overall logistics efficiency for both passenger and commercial vehicles.
Major Boost To Economic Development
Beyond improving travel convenience, the highway project is expected to serve as a powerful catalyst for economic growth in Narayanpet and Mahbubnagar districts.
Improved connectivity often leads to increased industrial activity, better market access, and stronger business opportunities. With smoother transport networks, local industries, small businesses, and trade are expected to benefit significantly.
Land acquisition for the project is already underway, and the compensation process for affected landowners is progressing. Authorities are moving forward with preparations, and the tendering process is expected to be completed soon.
Once construction begins, the project will not only create employment opportunities during its execution but will also deliver long-term economic benefits to the region.
Good News For Devotees Travelling To Srisailam
In addition to the NH-167 highway, the Central government has also approved several other road infrastructure projects in Telangana. One of the most significant among them is the proposed elevated corridor between Mannanur and Srisailam.
This elevated road, to be constructed near the Srisailam temple, is expected to reduce both travel distance and travel time for devotees visiting the sacred pilgrimage site.
Overall, the Central government has approved infrastructure projects worth Rs 1.60 lakh crore across various regions, with Telangana receiving a major share focused on strengthening its road and transport infrastructure.
