What began as an ordinary commute in Chennai quickly turned into an unforgettable experience for one woman, whose encounter with a share-auto driver has now captured the internet’s attention.
The story,
shared by Instagram page @the_dharani_theory, recounts a ride in Sholinganallur that was unlike any she had taken before. According to the woman, she was immediately struck by the unique setup inside the vehicle.
“The moment I entered the auto, I was practically amazed at what I saw,” she wrote.
Inside, passengers had access to an impressive collection of newspapers and magazines, including Frontline, Femina, Outlook and material designed for UPSC aspirants. The auto also featured two fully functional iPads, complimentary chocolates, umbrellas, a mini cooler, a flask filled with coffee and free Wi-Fi.
Adding to the experience was a sign that read, “Free for nurses, sanitary workers, teachers and doctors.”
The driver, identified as Annadurai, also kept passengers entertained with an eclectic music playlist that moved seamlessly between Shakira’s “Whenever, wherever” and devotional songs dedicated to Lord Murugan.
“Anna speaks seven languages, laughs loudly and does cute little dances while taking his savaari,” she wrote.
The ride became even more remarkable when another passenger recognised the driver and revealed that she had invited him to her college as a chief guest two years earlier.
Curious, the woman struck up a conversation and soon discovered that the cheerful auto driver was far more than he first appeared.
“It took me a few minutes of conversation to figure out that Anna was a seven-time TEDx speaker, giving lectures in companies like Google and Microsoft,” she wrote.
She added that Annadurai had earned recognition for transforming something as routine as a share-auto ride into a memorable and meaningful experience for passengers.
Before the journey ended, the driver asked about her profession. When she told him that she worked as both a teacher and a doctor, he declined to accept any payment for the ride despite her efforts to pay.
Reflecting on the encounter, she said the experience left her with a valuable lesson about work, dedication and purpose.
“He made me realise one thing that day. While we all complain about our jobs, Anna taught me how you can be successful in anything that you do if you love it enough, give your hundred per cent even on your bad days and work as an honest man.”
The post quickly gained traction online, with social media users praising Annadurai’s commitment to his profession and the joy he brings to passengers.
One user commented, “He is the real-life hero we need more of.”
Another was eager to experience the ride firsthand and asked, “Is there a way to book his auto?”
Several commenters shared their own encounters with the driver. One person recalled, “I don’t know if he remembers me, but we spoke at length – mostly about cats. I’ve had the pleasure of travelling with him twice on my way to work, and he’s an absolute delight to talk to.” And “He is such a good person, happened to travel in his auto twice during 2016 -2017. Happy to see all these new upgrades,” another person commented.
Others applauded the dignity and warmth with which he approaches his work.
“Simply wonderful. God bless him for the dignity he brings to his work and the warmth with which he treats people,” wrote one user.
Another echoed a sentiment many felt after reading the story, saying, “Choose a job you love, and it never feels like work.”
As the post continued to circulate online, many described Annadurai, who has a popular Instagram account under the handle @auto_anna, as an inspiration, proving that passion, kindness and dedication can turn even the simplest profession into something extraordinary.
