Residents of Jainagar in Bihar’s Madhubani district were left in awe on October 7 after a rare and stunning sight—snow-capped Himalayan peaks, including Mount Everest, appeared clearly visible from nearly
200 kilometres away. The mesmerising view, captured in several viral photos and videos, was made possible by unusually clear skies following heavy rainfall in the region.
According to meteorologists, the breathtaking visibility of the Himalayas from the plains of Bihar was a result of a haze-free atmosphere created by recent downpours. Heavy rains help wash away pollutants, dust, and particulate matter suspended in the air. This dramatically reduces haze and allows distant mountain ranges to become visible when weather conditions align perfectly.

Experts said the last time such clear views were widely reported was during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown, when lower pollution levels allowed residents of Punjab and Uttar Pradesh to see the Himalayas for the first time in decades.
Awe and Nostalgia Online
Videos of the peaks dominating the horizon quickly spread across social media platforms, especially on X (formerly Twitter). Many users described the sight as “unbelievable” and “once-in-a-lifetime.” Some even compared it to a “postcard come alive.” Others recalled similar moments from 2020, saying that the spectacle evoked both nostalgia and pride in India’s natural beauty.
Residents said that while they had occasionally seen faint outlines of the mountains before, the recent clarity was unlike anything they had ever witnessed. “It felt like the Himalayas were just next to us,” said one user from Madhubani, sharing photos that have now been liked thousands of times.
Everest Rescue Operation in Tibet
Meanwhile, across the border, Chinese authorities launched a successful rescue operation near the eastern face of Mount Everest in Tibet. Around 350 trekkers stranded in the Qudang township were brought to safety on Sunday. China Central Television (CCTV) reported that contact has also been established with over 200 other trekkers who were trapped at an altitude of more than 4,900 meters (16,000 feet).
A Reminder of Nature’s Fragility
The spectacle over Bihar serves as a powerful reminder of both the beauty and vulnerability of the environment. While heavy rains cleared the air this time, experts note that long-term improvements in air quality could make such natural wonders more frequent for future generations.
