India’s first indigenous hydrogen-powered water taxi service has been launched in Varanasi. Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, inaugurated the service on December 10, 2025,
from Namo Ghat. The water taxi will operate between Ravidas Ghat and Namo Ghat. There are plans to extend the service to Asi Ghat and Markandeya Dham later.
Constructed at Cochin Shipyard, the water taxi provides vegetarian refreshments, CCTV surveillance, and is equipped with bio-toilets. It operates approximately 7–8 round-trip per day and can accommodate up to 50 passengers. Powered by a hybrid electric–hydrogen engine, the vessel functions with zero air and noise emissions.
According to a report in Amar Ujala, the vessel has five hydrogen cylinders. It can reach a speed of 12,038 kilometres per hour. Three-kilowatt solar panels have been installed on the taxi as well. The outlet also reported that the initiative is an example of the Indian government’s commitment to Make in India and encouraging green transportation in all sectors.
