A Sepehran Airlines Boeing 737 flying from Mashhad to Kermanshah in Iran had to turn back soon after takeoff following a tyre issue and an engine emergency. Passengers inside the plane were left frightened
as the aircraft shook heavily.
Videos recorded inside the cabin showed parts of the overhead panels and lining coming loose during the flight. Passengers could be heard screaming and praying as some items also fell from the overhead compartments.
The Plane Returned Safely
The incident took place after the aircraft left Mashhad airport on September 15. According to Iran’s Razavi Khorasan provincial airports authority, part of the outer tread on one tyre came off while the plane was taking off. Officials said the tyre itself did not burst.
The pilot later told air traffic control about an engine emergency and asked to return to Mashhad. The aircraft landed safely, and no injuries were reported. Footage from the cabin showed passengers dealing with strong shaking. Interior panels and parts of the overhead lining appeared to come down as the plane was in the air.
However, the footage does not show the main body or structural roof of the Boeing 737 breaking apart. The damage seen in the videos appears to be limited to parts of the cabin interior.
Cause Of The Emergency Remains Unclear
It is not yet known whether the tyre problem was linked to the reported engine emergency. Officials are looking into the incident, and there is no confirmed evidence that the tyre issue caused engine damage.
The incident has also brought attention to Iran’s older commercial aircraft. The country has faced years of difficulty getting Western-made aircraft, spare parts and maintenance support because of international sanctions.
Sepehran Airlines was involved in another Boeing 737 incident at Mashhad on August 25. In that case, a Boeing 737-500 reportedly went off the runway after landing, and its nose landing gear collapsed. No injuries were reported.
Investigators are expected to check the aircraft’s tyre, landing gear, engines and cabin systems to find out what caused the latest emergency and the damage inside the plane.
