Commuting through one of Bengaluru’s busiest junctions is set to become more seamless, as the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation has initiated plans for an elevated pedestrian walkway at Silk Board.
The authority
has floated a tender for civil, structural, and finishing works for the project on April 5.
Walkway To Connect Yellow And Blue Lines
According to a report in The Times Of India, the proposed elevated walkway, approximately 250 metres long, will link the operational Yellow Line station, running between Bommasandra and RV Road, with the upcoming Blue Line station along the Outer Ring Road.
This connection is crucial, as Silk Board will not offer a direct interchange between the two lines, unlike major hubs such as Majestic, Rashtreeya Vidyalaya Road Metro Station, and MG Road Metro Station.
First Travelator In Namma Metro
A key highlight of the project is the inclusion of a travelator, marking the first time such a facility will be introduced in the Namma Metro network.
Commonly seen in airports, a travelator is a slow-moving conveyor-style walkway that helps pedestrians cover distances more comfortably, especially in large transit areas.
Project Cost, Timeline And Scope
According to the TOI report, the project is estimated to cost around Rs 59 crore. The contract will cover civil construction, structural development, and architectural finishing, ensuring both functionality and visual appeal.
Once awarded, the construction is expected to be completed within nine months. Bidders have been asked to submit proposals by May 5, with an earnest money deposit (EMD) set at Rs 58 lakh.
Tender Process And Land Acquisition
Officials stated that land acquisition for the project is currently underway. After the bidding period concludes, it may take one to two months to finalise the contractor.
At present, only the tender has been issued, and detailed technical specifications are yet to be fully finalised.
Boost To Future Connectivity
The upcoming Blue Line station at Silk Board is expected to be ready by December 2026 and will eventually connect to Kempegowda International Airport by 2027.
Once completed, the elevated walkway will play a key role in easing passenger movement between the two lines, particularly at this high-traffic junction.
