Veteran actor and politician Hema Malini on Monday expressed pride and gratitude as the Centre announced the Padma Vibhushan for her late husband, legendary actor Dharmendra. While welcoming the honour,
she also admitted to a lingering regret that the recognition for his immense contribution to Indian cinema did not arrive earlier.
‘Had It Come Earlier, He Would Have Been Very Happy’
Speaking to ANI, Hema Malini said the award was a moment of collective joy for the family and the nation, but also an emotional reminder of what could have been.
“It makes us very happy, the entire country is happy. Had it come earlier, Dharmendra ji would have been extremely happy, and seeing him, his fans would have been even happier,” she said, reacting to the announcement made on the eve of Republic Day.
Padma Vibhushan Announced On Republic Day Eve
Dharmendra has been selected for the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian honour, for his exceptional and distinguished service to the arts. The honour was announced as part of the official Padma Awards list for 2026, released by the Ministry of Home Affairs on the eve of Republic Day.
In a separate statement, Hema Malini described the recognition as long overdue. “So so proud that the government has recognised Dharam ji’s immense contribution to the film industry by bestowing on him the prestigious Padma Vibhushan award,” she said, thanking the Centre for acknowledging his legacy.
Remembering Hindi Cinema’s Original ‘He-Man’
Dharmendra, fondly known as Hindi cinema’s original ‘He-Man’, passed away on November 24, 2025, at the age of 89. His career spanned more than six decades, during which he became one of the most beloved and influential actors in Indian film history.
Known for his charismatic screen presence, warmth, and versatility, Dharmendra’s body of work includes classics such as Sholay, Chupke Chupke, Aya Sawan Jhoom Ke, Ayee Milan Ki Bela and Anupama.
Prayer Meet Held In Delhi Last Year

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP president J P Nadda, along with ministers and parliamentarians, were present and offered condolences to Hema Malini and her daughters, Esha and Ahana.
