A first look at Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama
Namit Malhotra’s Ramayana, envisioned as a two-part cinematic retelling of the ancient epic, has unveiled its first glimpse. The teaser offers audiences their first look at Ranbir Kapoor portraying Lord Rama, a figure deeply revered across generations.
Backed by Prime Focus Studios in association with DNEG and Monster Mind Creations, the film brings together large-scale filmmaking with a story that holds deep cultural and spiritual importance.
A story that transcends time
The teaser presents Rama not just as a hero, but as a symbol of values like duty, compassion and truth. For many, the Ramayana is more than a story — it is part of faith and tradition. The film aims to bring this timeless narrative to a global audience in a respectful and thoughtful way.
Understanding the character of Rama
At its core, the film focuses on Rama as someone defined by his choices — choosing duty over personal desire and staying strong through loss and exile. Revered as Maryada Purushottama, Rama represents ideal conduct and moral clarity. The film tries to show these qualities in a human and emotional way while staying true to the essence of the epic. Opening up on playing Lord Rama, Ranbir Kapoor said, “I don’t think I’m here to represent Rama. I’m here to learn from him. There is a simplicity and purity to him that is very rare; and trying to understand and imbibe that has been a deeply humbling experience.”
Voices behind the film
Director Nitesh Tiwari spoke about the emotional depth of the story, saying, “Ramayana’s greatness lies in its emotional richness. At its heart, it is not just about good and evil, but about choices, consequences, and the weight of doing what is right. Rama’s journey is deeply human and that is what we have tried to stay true to.”
Ranbir Kapoor shared his perspective on portraying Rama:
“I don’t think I’m here to represent Rama. I’m here to learn from him. There is a simplicity and purity to him that is very rare; and trying to understand and imbibe that has been a deeply humbling experience.”
Producer Namit Malhotra added, “The power of Rama’s story is not in what he conquers, but in what he lets go of. He represents a standard that is not easy, not convenient; but necessary. He chooses duty over desire, truth over comfort, and sacrifice over self. That is why his story has endured for thousands of years, and why it continues to matter today.”
Scale and storytelling
Ramayana: Part 1 brings together a wide ensemble, including Sai Pallavi as Sita, Yash as Ravana, Sunny Deol as Hanuman and Ravie Dubey as Lakshman. The film combines Indian storytelling traditions with global filmmaking expertise, including music by Hans Zimmer and A.R. Rahman. The narrative follows Rama’s journey alongside Sita and Lakshman, leading to a larger cosmic conflict that has been central to the epic for centuries. The first part of Ramayana is set to release in theatres globally during Diwali 2026, with the second part scheduled for Diwali 2027.
