Mumbai Weather Updates: Mumbai woke up once again to heavy rainfall on Monday, as waterlogged roads in several parts of the city led to traffic jams and tree collapses. The India Meteorological Department
(IMD) issued a red alert for Mumbai, upgrading it from orange.
The weather department said a heavy to very heavy spell of rain was very likely at a few places in Mumbai, and extremely heavy rainfall in isolated places. The IMD also issued a red alert in multiple districts and cities of Maharashtra, including Raigad, Ratnagiri, Satara, Kolhapur, and Pune.
Meanwhile, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced that all schools and colleges would remain closed due to heavy rains. Videos from Chunabhatti, Gandhi Market in Sion, and other places showed vehicles wading through knee-deep waters, causing a great deal of inconvenience to commuters. A slow traffic movement was seen on the Western Express Highway near Vile Parle as rain continued to lash the city.

Traffic Woes Plague Mumbai Amid Rain
Meanwhile, the Mumbai Traffic Police said that vehicular movement near Mahalaxmi Temple, King Circle flyover, and the Gandhi Market in Matunga were affected due to extensive waterlogging. Local trains were running late by 15 to 20 minutes, according to officials and commuters.
Heavy waterlogging – reaching nearly one foot in depth – also caused long traffic delays on the Wadala Freeway (northbound lanes), near the Dadar TT showroom area, at Hindmata Junction in Bhoiwada, and on Juhu Galli Barfiwala Road in Andheri. The traffic police advised people to avoid these roads and use alternative routes.

The city recorded an average of 37mm of rainfall from 9 am to 10 am on Monday, while the eastern suburbs saw a slightly higher 39 mm of rainfall. The western suburbs were comparatively less affected, logging 29mm rainfall. These brief but intense showers causing waterlogging and traffic disruptions in some areas.
Meanwhile, the weather department issued a nowcast warning at 10.30 am, stating the probability of moderate to intense spells of rain is very likely to occur at isolated places in the districts of Sindhudurg, Palghar during the next 3-4 hours.
Rains Cause Damage
Rains continued to wreak havoc in Mumbai on Sunday, as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reported six short circuits, 19 tree or branch falls, and two wall collapse incidents in the metropolis during the day. No injuries were reported.
Meanwhile, in its monsoon report, the BMC said that the island City, eastern suburbs and western suburbs recorded average rainfalls of 23.81 mm, 25.01 mm and 18.47 mm, respectively, between 8 am and 6 pm on Sunday. Some places recorded 40-45 mm rainfall, the report stated.
