Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a dig at TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee while the latter was opposing the women’s reservation bill in the Parliament, saying, “Let them speak; they can’t speak there in Bengal.”
Addressing the Lok Sabha, PM Modi said, “Some are creating trouble just for political benefit. However, I want to reassure you with responsibility that whether it’s north or south this process will not make any discrimination or injustice.”
He further said, “I can promise and give a guarantee. If you want me to use the word ‘guarantee’, I will use it; if you want me to use the word ‘promise’, I say so. Let’s not be under any illusion or arrogance.”
The extended Budget Session began with a three-day special sitting on Thursday (April 16, 2026), during which the Lok Sabha took up three key bills for consideration after a division on their introduction.
The bills — the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill; the Delimitation Bill, 2026; and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026 — are aimed at expediting the rollout of 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies.
Voting on the bills is scheduled for 4pm on Friday (April 17, 2026).
INDIA bloc parties have decided to vote against the delimitation provisions in the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said after a meeting of the alliance on Tuesday, April 13, 2026.
He clarified that the Opposition is not against 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies.
