For years, Mumbai has proudly carried the reputation of being one of India’s safest cities for women and a recent viral post has only added to that belief. A young woman recently shared a late-night photo
on X (formerly Twitter) that quickly caught everyone’s attention. In the picture, a woman is seen cycling down a dimly lit Mumbai road at 2 am.
Along with the photo, the user wrote, “The fact that it’s 2 am in Mumbai, I am alone riding my cycle and not even a single tissue in my body is scared — this is what Mumbai is.” She went on to ask, “Is Mumbai the safest city for women?”

Proud Mumbaikars React
Her post instantly went viral, with hundreds of people commenting, sharing their opinions. Many Mumbaikars proudly echoed her sentiment, saying that the city truly stands apart when it comes to women’s safety and freedom.
One user commented, “I personally have seen this, women roaming at dead of night alone. But again, Mumbai is a city that never sleeps!” Another added, “Totally. I have taken auto s at 2-3am and will feel safe compared to any other city. It’s because the city is still hustling at that time and because people are too busy with their lives. Helps a lot.”
Not Everyone Agrees
Not everyone agreed. Some pointed out that while Mumbai is relatively safer than many other cities, it’s still important to remain cautious because of the stray dogs. One reply read, “Not kidding, but I’ve seen girls and women jogging at 1 or 2 am in Borivali. And honestly, I’m more worried for them because of the stray dogs!”

Someone else added, “As a Mumbaikar, I can confirm that she may really need to be really worried of the stray dogs, instead of the human criminals.”
Meanwhile, a user pointed out, “We should be more worried about why people are jogging at 1 am.”
The lighthearted comments sparked a small debate with people sharing their own experiences of encounters with dogs when they walked home after late shifts. Still, the majority agreed that Mumbai does offer a unique sense of security especially for women who work or travel late at night.
