Pakistan has given its first lunar rover a name steeped in national history. The Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) on Thursday officially announced “Jinnah-1” as the name of the country’s
first lunar rover, marking a major step in Pakistan’s ambitions beyond Earth.
The rover is planned to travel to the Moon in 2029 aboard China’s Chang’e-8 mission, where it will operate in the lunar south polar region. For Pakistan, the mission represents more than a scientific experiment: it is an opportunity to put Pakistani-built technology and scientific expertise directly on the lunar surface.
Thousands of suggestions, one winning name
The name was chosen through a nationwide public competition that attracted more than 4,000 submissions from across Pakistan. “Jinnah-1” emerged as the most distinctive choice, having been proposed independently by seven participants.
The final winner was selected through a draw. Seventeen-year-old Tayyab Karim from Bahawalnagar was declared the successful entrant.
The choice of name pays tribute to Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan, while also carrying a symbolic message about the country’s aspirations in science, technology, and space exploration.
The “-1” designation gives the name an additional sense of a beginning—potentially the first in a longer line of Pakistani lunar missions.
What will Jinnah-1 do on the Moon?
Once deployed, Jinnah-1 is expected to conduct scientific investigations in the Moon’s challenging south polar environment.
Its planned research includes studying lunar surface characteristics, plasma and radiation while contributing to experiments relevant to future lunar exploration and the prospect of sustained human activity on the Moon.
The south pole is a particularly important target for modern lunar science because scientists are interested in its permanently shadowed regions and the possibility of water ice and other resources.
A new chapter in Pakistan’s space programme
Pakistan’s lunar rover project also reflects the country’s expanding cooperation with China in space exploration. The Chang’e-8 mission is part of China’s broader plans for lunar scientific research and future infrastructure.
For SUPARCO, Jinnah-1 is therefore both a technological project and a national milestone. The rover could give Pakistani engineers and researchers valuable experience in planetary robotics, lunar science, and deep-space operations.
When Jinnah-1 eventually reaches the Moon, its journey will carry a name familiar to generations of Pakistanis—while signalling the country’s determination to explore a frontier far beyond its own skies.
