The OTT space in India is seeing huge investments as streaming platforms compete to acquire big theatrical blockbusters. The latest to join this club is Aditya Dhar’s Dhurandhar 2, starring Ranveer Singh,
which has reportedly sold its digital rights to JioHotstar for a staggering ₹150 crore, making it one of the biggest OTT deals in the last few years. The digital streaming rights for the first part were acquired by Netflix for Rs 85 crore. While Dhurandhar 2 is set to premiere on JioHotstar soon, here’s a look at some of the biggest OTT deals in India so far.
Kalki 2898 AD
The sci-fi epic Kalki 2898 AD starring Prabhas and Deepika Padukone leads the OTT deals race with one of the biggest digital deals in Indian cinema history. Its futuristic scale and pan-India appeal contributed to its massive valuation. The film’s Hindi version was reportedly bought by Netflix for Rs 175 crore. While the Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam versions of the film were secured by Amazon Prime Video for a whopping Rs 200 crore.
RRR
SS Rajamouli’s global blockbuster RRR, starring Ram Charan and Jr NTR, had one of the biggest post-theatrical deals in Indian cinema, with its combined digital and satellite rights reportedly sold for around ₹325 crore to Zee group, making it a record-breaking OTT deal at the time.
KGF Chapter 2
Yash starrer KGF Chapter 2 also stands among the top OTT deals, driven by its record-breaking theatrical run. The film, which was released in 2022, was reportedly acquired by Amazon Prime Video for a whopping Rs 320 crores.
After these, the list includes Allu Arjun starrer Pushpa 2: The Rule (₹275 crore), Adipurush (₹200 crore), Salaar Part 1 (₹160 crore), followed by Devara Part 1 and Dhurandhar 2.
Coming back to Dhurandhar 2’s OTT release, the film is finally heading to OTT after weeks of speculation around its digital release. The film is drawing attention because it will stream on two different platforms, with Netflix handling international audiences and JioHotstar getting exclusive rights in India. The unusual release strategy has become a major talking point among fans, especially after reports confirmed that the OTT version will include an extended and uncensored cut longer than the theatrical release.
