Ganga Saptami 2026: History
According to Hindu mythology, Ganga originally descended to Earth on Ganga Dussehra to purify the ancestors of King Bhagirath. To prevent Ganga’s overwhelming descent from flooding the Earth, Lord Shiva trapped her in his hair and released her gently.
Later, Ganga’s powerful flow disturbed the Ashram of Sage Jahnu, who, in anger, swallowed all of Ganga’s waters. After much prayer and pleading from Bhagiratha and the Gods, Sage Jahnu relented, releasing Ganga from his ear on the Saptami of Vaishakha Shukla Paksha.
This day, known as Jahnu Saptami, is an important part of the lore surrounding Ganga’s journey to Earth. Ganga is also called Jahnavi, the daughter of Sage Jahnu.
Devotees believe that by performing rituals on Ganga Saptami, they too can purify themselves, eliminate sins, and strengthen their spiritual resolve.
