Pilgrims and tourists heading to the sacred Char Dham shrines in Uttarakhand are being urged to exercise extreme caution as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for heavy
rainfall, thunderstorms, hail, and gusty winds on May 12 and 13.
The Char Dham Yatra, one of India’s most revered Hindu pilgrimages, draws hundreds of thousands of devotees annually to the four holy sites: Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. This year, adverse weather threatens to disrupt travel plans, particularly in high-altitude areas above 4,500 meters in districts such as Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, and Chamoli.
State officials members have issued an advisory on how pilgrims should remain alert while traveling on steep slopes and monitor conditions closely. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) has been placed on high alert across several districts to respond to any emergencies.
Char Dham Yatra 2026 Travel Advisory
According to IMD forecasts, the orange alert signals the likelihood of intense rainfall accompanied by thunder, lightning, hailstorms, and strong winds. Visibility on mountain roads may drop significantly, increasing the risk of landslides—a perennial hazard during the monsoon transition period in the Himalayas. Temperatures are also expected to fall by 2-4 degrees Celsius over the next few days.
Travelers undertaking the Char Dham routes, including Rishikesh to Rudraprayag (for Kedarnath), Joshimath to Badrinath, Uttarkashi to Gangotri, and Barkot to Yamunotri, should prepare for possible delays or itinerary changes. Mountaineering expeditions and treks in the region may face disruptions due to cold, wet conditions.
Safety Guidelines for Pilgrims and Tourists
- Avoid traveling during heavy downpours or thunderstorms. Seek shelter indoors and keep away from electrical conductors.
- Monitor official weather apps and local advisories before departing.
- Carry appropriate rain gear, warm clothing, and essential medicines, as weather can turn rapidly in the hills.
- Double-check bookings with tour operators, as schedules might shift.
- Heed road safety warnings, especially regarding landslide-prone stretches.
- The IMD expects conditions to improve by May 14, with thunderstorms diminishing and winds reducing to 30-40 kmph. Clearer weather is anticipated by May 15, allowing the yatra to resume more smoothly.
While the spiritual pull of Char Dham remains strong, authorities stress that safety must come first. Devotees are encouraged to consider postponing non-essential travel segments until after May 13 if possible.
