West Indies star Shimron Hetmyer pulled off a stunning catch to get rid of Scotland’s George Munsey in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 encounter between the sides on Saturday at the Eden Gardens.
Hetmyer came
in diving to pick up a single-handed catch and get rid of the Scottish opener, off Shamar Joseph’s delivery in what will go down as one of the finest catches in the history of the tournament.
The West Indies posted a total of 182/5 thanks to Shimron Hetmyer’s 64-run knock off just 34 deliveries after Scotland captain Richie Berrington won the coin toss and opted to field first.
WI opened Shai Hope ad Bradong King put up a 54-run stand for the first wicket before the duo fell in quick succession as the skipper was dismissed for 19, before King was scalped for 34.
Hetmyer took the game by the scruff with his quickfire knock that kept the scoreboard ticking. The Windies also had sizeable contributions from Sherfane Rutherford and Rovman Powell as the two-time champions set Scotland a target of 183 to win.
Scotland who began the chase with Michael Jones and Musey, lost the wicket of the former cheaply for just a single run to Jason Holder, before Brandon McMullen was removed by Romario Shepard for 14 off 12 deliveries.
Munsey, who had added 19 off 15 couldn’t believe his fate as Hetmyer pulled off the astounding catch in the deep to bring the opener’s innings to an end.
Earlier in the day, Pakistan opened the tournament with a 3-wicket win over The Netherlands with 3 deliveries left to spare in a thriller as Pakistan huffed-and-puffed their way to the target of 148 runs after the Dutch looked to have sprung a surprise in the curtain-rasier, only for the seasoned team in green to find their way back thanks to knocks from Sahibzada Farhan and Faheem Ashraf.
