Taylor Swift is likely to marry her longtime beau Travis Kelce over the July 4 weekend. While fans are super excited for the August singer’s wedding, it has also sparked criticism in New York, with many
residents voicing frustration over reports that streets around Madison Square Garden (MSG) could be closed for the couple’s high-profile celebration.
Why Are New Yorkers Upset?
According to multiple reports, Taylor Swift is seeking permissions to close streets around Madison Square Garden from July 2 until midday on July 4, with the main wedding celebration expected to take place on July 3. The proposed closures coincide with one of the busiest weekends of the year, just ahead of Independence Day celebrations. Therefore, it has raised concerns about traffic congestion and disruption for commuters and local businesses.
The possibility of shutting down public roads for a private celebrity event has triggered widespread criticism, with many questioning whether any couple, regardless of their fame, should enjoy such privileges.
“That’s selfish of them. So how are the residents supposed to navigate?” one of the users wrote on X. “Good luck to anyone trying to commute in New York City during those days 💀🚕,” added another.
What We Know About The Wedding
While neither Taylor Swift nor Travis Kelce has officially confirmed their wedding date or venue, several reports suggest Madison Square Garden is expected to host the celebrations.
According to reports, event permits have been submitted for temporary structures outside the venue, while nearby hotels have reportedly received bookings from Kansas City Chiefs players expected to attend. The event is also believed to feature between 500 and nearly 1,000 guests.
Official Confirmation Still Awaited
Meanwhile, it should be noted that Swift and Kelce have remained silent about their wedding plans. The reported street closures and venue arrangements have fuelled intense public discussion, but the couple’s representatives have not issued any official statement as of now.
While Taylor or Travis have not confirmed their wedding as of now, the latter’s brother Jason Kelce recently shared his enthusiasm for the couple’s next chapter. “Obviously very excited, very excited for my brother, obviously a big moment for him,” he said, as quoted by PEOPLE. “I’m very happy for both of them and looking forward to celebrating with them, and it’s a good year right now and it’s a good year for both of them as well,” Kelce’s brother added.
