Emraan Hashmi will soon be seen in Haq, wherein he plays Mohd Ahmed Khan. Also starring Yami Gautam in the lead, the movie is a courtroom drama inspired by the Shah Bano case. Ahead of the film’s release,
Emraan said that the character he portrays has different personal beliefs from his own, but this difference in perspective is what draws actors to characters.
Emraan Hashmi said, “You you might play characters that are close to your ideology or your belief system but the whole idea of being an artiste is also to play characters you don’t understand. So, in the process of playing that character you start understanding them better.”
The actor also told IANS, “When you read the script, you re-read it, when you play those, enact those scenes emotionally, something happens where it is like, ‘Okay this is what this character comes from, this is the truth of the character.’”
He mentioned, “So that’s something that’s exciting for all actors, and the more distant it is from your belief system, from your ideology, your world view, the more interesting it becomes because you understand yourself, and when you’re playing a character that’s close to you, then where’s the fun in that? You know exactly what that is but then doing something that you don’t understand, that’s the challenge and that is also a certain awakening.”
About Haq
Emraan and Yami will play the lead roles as Mohd Ahmed Khan and Shah Bano Begum, with a fierce courtroom confrontation. The Mohd. Ahmad Khan v. Shah Bano Begum, or the Shah Bano maintenance case, has been considered a legal milestone in the battle for the protection of the rights of Muslim women in India.
In 1978, Shah Bano (62) filed a petition in the Indore court, seeking maintenance from her divorced husband, Mohammed Ahmed Khan, an affluent and well-known lawyer. The two married in 1932 and had five children — three sons and two daughters. In 1985, the Supreme Court ruled that Shah Bano was entitled to maintenance under Section 125. However, a year later, the Rajiv Gandhi government brought in legislation to nullify the court verdict.
Directed by Suparn S Varma, Haq also features Vartika Singh, Danish Husain, Sheeba Chadha, and Aseem Hattangady in prominent roles. Made under the banner of Junglee Pictures, the film is produced by Vineet Jain, Vishal Gurnani, Juhi Parekh Mehta, and Harman Baweja. It will hit theatres on November 7, 2025.
