Amid unrest in Nepal, a bus carrying 49 Indian tourists was allegedly attacked near Sonauli on the India-Nepal border on September 9, leaving several passengers injured.
According to the details, the attack
took place while the group was returning from Kathmandu after offering prayers at the Pashupatinath Temple.
Commenting on the incident, the driver of the bus, Ramu Nishad, said that the mob began pelting stones without provocation.
“We were returning after darshan at the Pashupatinath Temple, when suddenly a mob surrounded our bus and attacked without reason,” he told reporters.
“There were women and elderly people among the passengers, but the protesters did not care,” the driver added.
The stone-pelting shattered windows and caused injuries, including to women and elderly passengers, it was known.
Authorities rushed the injured to a hospital in Kathmandu.
The Indian Embassy, coordinating with the Nepalese government, later arranged a special flight to bring the rest of the passengers safely back to India.
Meanwhile, the death toll in Nepal’s anti-corruption protests has jumped to 51, Reuters quoted a police spokesperson as saying.
Also, the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) has so far apprehended 67 inmates, including a woman, while they were attempting to cross into India through various checkpoints along the India-Nepal border after fleeing different jails in Nepal.
All the prisoners were caught from different checkposts along the India-Nepal border connecting India’s Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal states, officials told news agency ANI.
As per the officials, these prisoners were held when they failed to show any valid identity card to the SSB personnel deployed on the border between the two friendly countries.
The crisis began after violent protests erupted in several Nepali towns, leading to incidents of arson, vandalism, and attacks on correctional facilities.
Taking advantage of the turmoil, thousands of prisoners managed to flee from jails.
The violent anti-government protests, which forced Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to resign on Tuesday, led to a serious law and order situation across districts, prompting the Nepal Army to impose restriction orders followed by curfew.
With the situation in Nepal still tense, Indian security agencies remain on high alert.
