N Chandrasekaran has resigned as chairman of Tata Sons. He has also decided not to seek reappointment as chairman of Tata Sons when his current term ends on February 20, 2027, bringing his tenure at the
helm of the Tata Group’s principal holding company towards an end.
In a statement dated August 12, 2026, Chandrasekaran said his decision came after the Tata Sons Board failed to reach a resolution on the extension of his term for the past six months.
According to Chandrasekaran, the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and Sir Ratan Tata Trust had unanimously resolved and recommended the extension of his next term by five years. The recommendation was also recorded and recommended by the Tata Sons Nomination and Remuneration Committee and the Board.
According to Chandrasekaran, “Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and Sir Ratan Tata Trust had unanimously resolved and recommended the extension of my next term for a period of five years, which was recorded and recommended by the Tata Sons Nomination and Remuneration Committee and the Board. Subsequently, the resolution was tabled in the Tata Sons Board on Feb 24, 2026. However, the proposal was not carried through because one of the Board Members did not support it, and in the absence of unanimous support, I chose to defer the decision.”
Why Did N Chandrasekaran Decide Not to Seek Another Term?
The key reason cited by Chandrasekaran is the prolonged uncertainty over the Tata Sons leadership. “It has been 6 months since that Board meeting, and no resolution has been reached till date,” Chandrasekaran said in his statement.
He pointed out that Tata Sons is a large institution with several strategic projects at critical stages of execution. Against this backdrop, he said the Group needs clarity on who will lead it beyond February 2027.
According to Chandrasekaran, leadership clarity is important not only for the organisation but also for its employees, investors, partners and other stakeholders.
“Under these circumstances,” he said, he communicated to the Tata Sons Board that he had decided not to offer himself for reappointment when his current term ends on February 20, 2027. He has also asked the Board to decide on his successor soon to ensure a proper transition.
What Did Tata Trusts Recommend?
Chandrasekaran said the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and Sir Ratan Tata Trust had unanimously resolved and recommended a five-year extension of his term.
The recommendation was subsequently recorded and recommended by the Tata Sons Nomination and Remuneration Committee and the Board. However, the proposal did not receive unanimous support when it was tabled before the Tata Sons Board on February 24, 2026.
Chandrasekaran said he chose to defer the decision because of the lack of unanimous support.

When Will N Chandrasekaran’s Tenure End?
