In a major administrative overhaul aimed at protecting the national capital’s high-security core, the Delhi Police on Monday officially denotified Jantar Mantar as a designated protest site, replacing
it with three alternative decentralized venues across the city. The strategic reallocation shifts all future public demonstrations to Ramlila Maidan (Central Delhi), Burari Ground (North Delhi), and the CBD Ground (East Delhi) after a comprehensive security assessment cited escalating crowd sizes and persistent gridlock in the heart of government.
SECURITY AND CIVIL PROTECTION DRIVE CHANGE
Senior officials stated thatthe decision was driven by the critical need to balance democratic rights with national security, fluid traffic management, and the protection of sensitive governance infrastructure.
Central Delhi houses apex government offices, parliament, and ministries protected by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), which is legally obligated to maintain stringent security perimeters against escalating agitations. Police emphasized that the paramount focus is ensuring the safety of protesters while safeguarding the convenience of daily commuters so that routine civic life remains entirely unhindered.
HISTORICAL PRECEDENT
This is not the first time New Delhi has remapped its agitating zones. The Boat Club lawns along the Central Vista, once the city’s primary rallying point, were similarly denotified by a previous administration following massive farmer-led blockades in the late 1980s, which forced an identical migration of political movements to Jantar Mantar.
ENHANCED REGIONAL MOBILITY FOCUS
The three newly approved grounds were chosen explicitly for their greater mobility, multi-directional entry points, and high-capacity traffic transit flexibility:
1. Ramlila Maidan
A historic venue that has hosted generation-defining political rallies for both ruling and opposition parties.
Metro: Direct access via the Delhi Gate, Turkman Gate, and Jama Masjid stations, offering rapid Violet Line and Yellow Line interconnectivity.
Road: Highly accessible via Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg and Asaf Ali Road.
2. Burari Ground
A sprawling alternative designed to safely accommodate massive, long-haul crowds.
Metro: Connected via the Yellow Line at GTB Nagar and Model Town stations, supported by dedicated feeder bus networks.
Road: Enjoys direct arterial access via the Outer Ring Road and Burari Main Road.
3. CBD Ground (East Delhi)
Strategically situated to handle trans-Yamuna mobilization without choking the city center.
Metro: Seamlessly linked via the Karkardooma interchange (Blue and Pink Lines), Maharaja Surajmal Stadium, and Karkardooma Court stations.
Road: Directly accessible via major commercial veins including Vikas Marg and the 100-Foot Road.
The new enforcement protocols take effect immediately, and all prospective organizers must route their security clearances through these designated zones moving forward.
